Choose Your Colour Palette.
The location of the photoshoot is one thing to consider when thinking about colours and outfits to wear. The background we will be shooting against and your clothing colours can make a big difference in the outcome of your photographs. As a general rule, go for shades and tones that compliment each other. A good way to start is for mum to choose her outfit and then pick some of the hues from there that coordinate well together. Choose multiple colours for your family to add dimension to your photographs.
Don’t Match. Coordinate.
It's important to remember that you don't need to match your outfits perfectly, but rather coordinate them to create a cohesive look. Coordinate by mixing patterns or prints and solids or textures. If going with a solid colour, find something with texture. The more texture and character, the better it will photograph. Do stay away from matching colours and outfits! Gone are the days of matching tops and bottoms!
Layering.
Wear layers to add dimension and depth to your images. If the weather is hot, layer with accessories. Accessories lend pops of colour, personality and interest. In cool weather, layer with cardigans, vests, scarves, boots and hats. These will allow a lot more variety in your poses and shots as well as provide more visual interest in each photo.
Keep Make Up Natural.
Avoid using heavy make up and use just a bit of colour in your lips, cheeks and eyes to help bring some life in the photos.
Avoid Graphics, Logos or Illustrations.
A big animal, logo or big flower patterns on clothing can be very distracting. Instead of looking at the faces in your photos, eyes will be drawn to those heavy graphic elements. You might want to skip that Spiderman t-shirt or Elsa dress for your family session. Be timeless. You will want your photographs to stand the test of time.
Outfit Changes.
If time allows it, bring another set of outfits. You will get more variety in your shots so why not capitalise on the opportunity and make the most of the session!

Seasonal Styling Tips
SPRING: For a spring family photoshoot, light and pastel colors are a great choice. Soft blues, pinks, and greens are perfect for this season. Flowy dresses and skirts for the ladies and pastel shirts with khakis for the gentleman would be a great idea. You can also add floral prints into your wardrobe to add a pop of color.

SUMMER: Summer is a great time for outdoor family photoshoots, so keep the outfits cool and comfortable. Light and airy clothing such as white linen dresses or khaki shorts and polo shirts work great. You can also add pops of color with accessories such as hats, scarves, or jewelry.

AUTUMN: For a fall family photoshoot, earthy tones such as browns, oranges, and yellows work beautifully. Sweaters and cardigans are great for layering, and you can add texture with scarves, hats, or boots. Neutrals such as grey, black, and cream also work well in the fall season.
